Joburg appearance after launching new “Things We Don’t Talk About” album
South African musician Jimmy Nevis has kept the hits coming for the past 10 years, and now the Cape Town pop singer has made a whistle-stop visit to Johannesburg to promote his new album “Things We Don’t Talk About”.
Nevis, famous for his hit songs “Heartboxing”, “Balloon” and “Hey Jimmy”, stayed at The Maslow Hotel in Sandton while he visited radio and TV stations to conduct interviews. A free, hour-long acoustic performance for 60 fans at The Maslow’s Lacuna Bar on Friday night was exactly what his Joburg fans needed. Apart from singing familiar songs and tracks from the new album, he connected with fans and took time to hang out and take photos.
“The new album is four years in the making, and the feedback has been phenomenal,” Nevis said. “People who know my music might think it’s slightly controversial, but I am inviting people to share things they possibly haven’t spoken about before. We are creating space, and I am feeling more intimacy between myself and my audience.” Nevis said he is using music to create a safer conversation at a time when social media especially, could be a dark place.
“Things We Don’t Talk About” was launched with a silent disco and full-sensory experience in Cape Town. “I wanted to do things I haven’t done before, so the album’s first song was launched on a commercial airline flight. And in another activation, I had an ice-cream truck going around my hood and Sea Point.”

A return guest to The Maslow, Nevis recalled visiting the tranquil garden oasis hotel for a launch party when he was new to the music industry. “Staying here now makes me reminisce about the early days,” he said. “This time around I get to explore the facilities. I am proud to be collaborating and sharing the experience of my new album in such a beautiful space.”
Herman Swart, Maslow General Manager, said it was serendipitous that Nevis had been in the industry for 10 years at a time when the hotel was also celebrating 10 years of being in business. “Sun International is pleased to support the arts by hosting a proudly South African musician, and we wish Jimmy much success with his new album.”
For those who missed the intimate evening with Nevis, he will be back in the City of Gold next month for more concerts.
